Forest tree to 30 m, common. Trunk brown-green. Leaves absent at flowering time. Flowering prolific. Inflorescence branches, perianth and staminal column very bright blood red, varying slightly in shade (more or less orange.) Perianth thick, lobes white edged. Anthers yellow pedicels with thickening 5 mm from perianth. Young fruit green on long gynophore.
